Is Trump worth winning an award?

Donald Trump also proposed for the Nobel Peace Prize this year

Oslo / Washington - If the Norwegian MP Christian Tybring-Gjedde has his way, US President Donald Trump has earned the Nobel Peace Prize 2020 - because of his role in the agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE ) to normalize their bilateral diplomatic relations.

In principle, any person can be nominated for the Nobel Prize within the terms of the announcement. Numerous despots can also be found on this list every year.

Tybring-Gjedde had already proposed the 45th President of the United States of America in 2018 when he met with dictator Kim Jong-un in Singapore after decades of bitter hostility between the United States and North Korea. However, neither this nor a follow-up meeting has so far actually contributed anything to significantly easing the precarious security situation in the Pacific: Pyongyang is still threatening to use nuclear missiles if necessary and is not thinking of stopping its nuclear weapons program.

"Not a fan", but ...

"I'm not a big Trump supporter," said the Norwegian in an interview with the US broadcaster Fox News, but you just have to recognize the achievements of the American president. His predecessor Barack Obama, winner of the 2009 award, "did nothing". In fact, the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Obama was one of the most controversial decisions recently. The 44th US President had been in office for less than a year at the time.

Before Trump and Obama, George W. Bush was recommended several times for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Among the most absurd and controversial nominations in the past few decades were those of the dictators Benito Mussolini, Josef Stalin and Adolf Hitler. Fidel Castro was also nominated. Russian President Vladimir Putin was also on this list, from which the Nobel Committee then selects a winner, who is honored each December. (red, 9.9.2020)
