How do gorillas attack humans
What do chimpanzees look like?
Chimpanzees are a species in the great ape family, as are gorillas, orangutans, and humans.
They have the typical build of the great apes: the trunk is 70 to 94 centimeters long. Erected on their back legs, they are 100 to 170 centimeters tall. The females are significantly smaller than the males and only grow up to 130 centimeters.
The weight of males and females also differs: males weigh between 35 and 70 kilograms, while females weigh only 25 to 50 kilograms.
Like all great apes, chimpanzees do not have a tail.
The arms, which are significantly longer than the legs, are typical of chimpanzees.
They each have five fingers or toes on their hands and feet. The animals can put their thumb or big toe opposite the other fingers or toes, so that hands and feet are perfect for grasping and make the animals real climbing professionals. The fur of the chimpanzee is dark brown to black.
The face is hairless and light in young animals, dark in adults. The palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, the tops of the fingers and toes, and the region around the anus are also hairless. The protruding snout and the bulges above the eyes give the animals their characteristic appearance.
Chimpanzees have strong teeth - the males' canines in particular are impressive and can be dangerous weapons.
Where do chimpanzees live?
Chimpanzees are only found in western and central Africa. There they can be found in Senegal, in Nigeria, in the north and east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as well as in Uganda and Tanzania. The closely related bonobo, on the other hand, is only found in some regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Unlike gorillas and orangutans, chimpanzees live in very different habitats: They colonize the rainforest, but also the savannah, where only a few trees grow.
The bonobos, on the other hand, can only be found in rainforests.
What types of chimpanzees are there?
Researchers divide chimpanzees into four subspecies that can be found in different regions of Africa.
The bonobo (Pan paniscus), which is more delicate than the common chimpanzee, also belongs to the genus of chimpanzees.
How old do chimpanzees get?
In the wild, chimpanzees live to be 30 to 40 years old. In captivity, they can live for up to 50 years.
How do chimpanzees live?
Humans and chimpanzees share common ancestors, and 99 percent of their genetic information is identical to our genes. That is why they are so familiar to us.
Above all, the work of the famous behaviorist Jane Goodall has shown us how similar the behavior of chimpanzees and humans can be.
Chimpanzees are considered to be the most intelligent animals. In addition to their pronounced social behavior, they are famous for their use of tools: They use stones and pieces of wood as hammers, make sticks out of branches with which they poke for food or use chewed leaves as a sponge.
The pups learn by learning how to use the tools from the adults.
And adult animals also learn from one another by watching.
Chimpanzees cannot speak because their larynx is not suitable, but in captivity chimpanzees could be taught a sign language with which the animals could communicate very well with their keepers.
Chimpanzees are active during the day. They can be found on the ground and in the trees, where they skillfully move from branch to branch. When walking on the floor, support themselves on the knuckles of their hands.
At night they sleep on trees in nests made of leaves and twigs.
Chimpanzees are very sociable. They live in clans of up to 60 animals, which are divided into small subgroups.
The composition of these subgroups can change again and again. This means that the animals always come together to form new, small groups. The leader is usually a male.
You can often see chimpanzees grooming each other. This behavior is very important: This is how the animals show that they belong together and like each other. In addition, the hierarchy of grooming also reflects: Lower-ranking animals usually groom higher-ranking animals.
But chimpanzees can also be very aggressive:
Serious fighting can occur, especially between groups made up of only young males.
And we also know that chimpanzees sometimes hunt smaller species of monkeys or even kill the offspring of other chimpanzees.
Friends and enemies of the chimpanzee
Next to predators, humans are the chimpanzees' greatest enemy. In the past, the animals were hunted and caught. This is forbidden today, but because humans destroy and colonize the habitat of animals, they find less and less space to live.
How do chimpanzees reproduce?
Chimpanzees can reproduce all year round. If a female is ready to mate, this can be clearly seen by a swelling on the buttocks. The gestation period lasts about seven months. Usually only one young, very rarely twins, is born.
A baby chimpanzee weighs one to two kilograms at birth. At first it clings to the mother's stomach, later it rides on her back.
Young chimpanzees have been dependent on their mother for a very long time. They are not weaned until they are around four years old, but even then they stay with their mother.
They become sexually mature at seven to nine years of age, but usually only reproduce when they are older than 13 years.
How do chimpanzees communicate?
Chimpanzees communicate using different sounds and a distinctive body language that consists of numerous gestures and signs.
What do chimpanzees eat?
Chimpanzees are omnivores.
Although they mainly feed on leaves, flowers, fruits, nuts and seeds, they also eat insects, caterpillars and many other small animals.
Chimpanzees even hunt other animals such as smaller monkeys in the group.
Chimpanzees can be seen in many zoos. There they are usually the darlings of the animals because it is so fascinating to watch them.
