How to make putty

Putty windows - the right way

The joint is filled with linseed oil so that the glass in wooden windows is tightly connected to the frame. This can become hard and brittle and must be replaced with new ones at regular intervals. We will show you how the removal of the putty residue and the putty work.

Remove old putty from window frames

Use a small screwdriver to pry loose kit out of the joint. You can heat stuck material to make it too soft. To do this, use a device that works with infrared. You can borrow it from a glazier or hardware store. The putty can also be heated with a hot air blower, but this can damage the glass. Finally, vacuum all crevices with a vacuum cleaner to remove splinters or pieces of putty.

Prepare the wood for the putty

Window putty consists of chalk, called calcium carbonate, and linseed oil varnish. You can process the putty optimally when the linseed oil content is around fifteen percent. Since wood soaks up this oil, you should soak the wood with oil before puttying. Brush the frame twice thick with linseed oil varnish. Without this measure, the putty becomes crumbly too quickly and can no longer be processed.

This is how the seal works

Apply a roll of putty with your fingers along the gap between the frame and the window glass. This step does not have to be done carefully, just make sure that there are no gaps. Peel off the putty with a glass knife. The surface created in this way should be at a 45-degree angle to the pane and the frame.

Wait four hours before smoothing the putty joint: To do this, quickly run your fingertip over the putty. You get a smooth chamfer. Wear disposable gloves for this work, as the putty sticks strongly. You can also sprinkle some whiting chalk over the putty if you prefer to work without gloves.

Further measures on glass and putty

Since you have worked with oil, the windows are now covered with a layer of fat, which should be removed: Mix whiting chalk and spirit to a paste and spread it on the panes. Then wash off the pulp and fat with water. After four to eight weeks, a skin forms on the putty. Paint this with an elastic solvent-based paint.
