19 Dec 2019 - 13:06 | Version 15 | LisaVeemees

This working paper explains the special features of cataloging compilations according to RDA.
This includes: Particular attention is paid to the specific categories (130, 240, 245, 249, 505, 700 12, 710 22, 711 22, 730 02) and their application is shown using examples. Since the rules apply equally to print as well as online resources, the examples here are presented as "material-neutral". The complete examples can be found in Alma or an overview of the examples (with screenshots of title pages, tables of contents or other important pages) in the collection of examples! Basics

Resources that appear as a single unit, but whose manifestation embodies several works, are called compilations. It should contain at least two works of essentially equal rank. RDA distinguishes between two types of compilations, which - depending on the presentation of the respective resource - come in two variants: The compilations also include text editions.

In the event that several works by different intellectual creators are embodied in one resource, but there is no compilation, see the Compilation or Main Work with Supplement? Page. According to the RDA, people, families and corporations are considered to be actors.

The following applies to both types of compilations: If there is a superordinate title, this is determined as the main title of the manifestation when a comprehensive description is created. The works included in the compilation may be recorded as related works.
An example of a compilation in which the works contained were not recorded is the collection of essays "100 Years of Totem and Taboo" (AC08931981, see sample collection).

Which categories are relevant for compilations?

130 0 # Preferred title of the work

This category is used for a preferred title if it is a non-fiction work, i.e. if there is no spiritual creator in cat. 100, 110 or 111.

If there is a data record for the work in the GND, it will be linked.
130 0#$$ a title
$$ 0 GND number [if available]
For general information see 130 Main entry Preferred title of work.

240 10 Preferred title of the work

Category 240 with indicators 10 is used for a preferred title when there is a spiritual creator in cat. 100, 110 or 111.
If there is a data record for the work in the GND, it will be linked.
240 10$$ a title
$$ 0 GND number [if available]
For complete works or complete works in a single form, see Subfield $$ F a CV list: On the other hand, there can also be a separate GND data record in this case, e.g. for Franz Kafka's novels (→ example). If the present resource is a compilation that has been published under the same title as a work contained therein, an identifying addition in $$ g must be given:
100 1#$$ a Wittmann, Heinz $$ d 1907-1986 $$ 0 (DE-588) 118769650 $$ 4 aut
240 10$$ a Venus going astray $$ g compilation

700 12/710 22/711 22/730 02 Standardized search entry for related works

The titles of related works or works embodied in the manifestation can be recorded. This is particularly useful if the manifestation titles of the parts and their preferred titles differ from one another (e.g. in the case of translations). The categories are repeatable.
These categories contain the titles in the form of the standardized search entry, depending on whether the spiritual creator is a person (700 12), a corporation (710 12) or a conference (711 22) or it is a title work (730 02) acts.
Articles are set in non-sorting characters.
If there is a data record for the work in the GND, it will be linked. The spiritual creator is a person:
700 12$$ a name of the person
$$ d life dates
$$ t Preferred title of the work
$$ 0 GND number [if available]
If the person has a name that does not correspond to the form "Last name, first name", the indicator is 02. (→ example) The spiritual creator is a corporation:
710 22$$ a name of the corporation
$$ t Preferred title of the work
$$ 0 GND number [if available]
If the corporate body is a local authority, the indicator is 12. The spiritual creator is a conference:
711 22$$ a name of the conference
$$ t Preferred title of the work
$$ 0 GND number [if available]
(→ example) Title work (without intellectual creator):
730 02$$ a Preferred title of the work
$$ 0 GND number [if available]
Example:
245 10$$ a Augsburger Nibelungenlied und -klage $$ b Edition and investigation of the Nibelungen manuscript b $$ c Michaela Eser
730 02$$ a Nibelungenlied $$ 0 (DE-588) 4042046-2
730 02$$ a Klage $$ g Epos $$ 0 (DE-588) 4163993-5
