Corona crisis: Shakira thanks residents of her hometown

Bogotá (dpa) - The Colombian singer Shakira thanked the residents of her hometown of Barranquilla for their behavior in the Corona crisis. With a view to the fact that many stayed at home, she wrote on Tuesday on Twitter: "This is how you continue to protect the risk groups."

The 43-year-old took the port city's birthday as an opportunity to congratulate it on its founding 207 years ago.

Shakira was born and raised in Barranquilla, Colombia's Caribbean coast, before moving to Colombia's capital, Bogotá, at 17, and then to Florida in the United States to pursue her career. Today she lives in Barcelona but is still connected to Colombia.

Colombia's President Iván Duque had issued exit restrictions that should end on April 13, but extended them to April 27 on Monday. Schools and universities are even supposed to remain closed until the end of May. In the South American country, the number of people infected with corona was last at more than 1,500, 46 people have so far died in connection with the virus.
