Social Code Book 9

§ 2 paragraph 1 SGB IX
“People with disabilities are people who have physical, emotional, mental or sensory impairments which, in interaction with attitudes and environmental barriers, can very likely prevent them from participating in society on an equal footing for more than six months. An impairment according to sentence 1 exists if the state of body and health deviates from the state typical for age. People are at risk of disability if an impairment according to sentence 1 is to be expected. "

§ 2 Paragraph 2 SGB IX
"People are severely disabled within the meaning of Part 3 (of SGB IX) if they have a degree of disability of at least 50 and their place of residence, their habitual residence or their employment in a job within the meaning of Section 156 is lawful within the scope of this code to have."

UN Disability Rights Convention

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which was also ratified by the Federal Republic of Germany, has further developed the concept of disability and, according to the motto "We are not disabled, we are disabled", focuses more on social barriers:

Chronic diseases

Also included are chronic diseases with an episodic course, for example rheumatism, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis or allergies.
