Can you give us an insight into your work at fortiss?

As a research assistant in the competence field Software Dependability, I am researching the Neural Network Dependability Kit (NNDK), an open source toolbox that provides metrics for a better understanding of how neural networks work in AI. The kit is based on formal methods that are used for modeling and rigorous testing of computer systems in order to prove faultlessness in safety-critical systems. Thus, neural networks can be developed that are more robust, reliable, interpretable and trustworthy. This is also the area in which I am writing my doctoral thesis on the side.

How did you find out about fortiss?

My cousin has a friend who worked at fortiss. I talked to him about my priorities and he recommended fortiss to me.

What have you done particularly well in the last few months?

In order to verify the security threshold of a neural network - in relation to enemy attacks - I used a formal method. In addition, in a research project, I helped a partner company achieve better performance and a more robust AI solution in their innovative project.

When did you start getting interested in programming?

In 2008 I taught myself how to code. My first programming assignment was a simple calculator. It was fun creating solutions just by writing text on a screen. I later took programming language courses after school and then started my Bachelor in Information Technology at the University of Allahabad (IIIT). I went to Munich for my master’s degree because I wanted to work scientifically and because Germany is more specialized here than India.

What does the fortiss working environment offer you?

fortiss offers me research opportunities in the areas that interest me. Thanks to application-oriented research, I also work a lot with industrial partners and can also try out innovative ideas in small companies, which are more flexible here than large ones.

What do you want to achieve as a scientist and where do you want to see your results in action?

I want to make neural networks reliable and accessible in security-critical situations. I also want to understand the inner workings of neural networks in order to make them easier to modify for developers and scientists with innovative practical projects. I would like to see my work in systems that directly influence people's lives, such as robust and verifiable safety-critical AI applications for autonomous driving or understandable, medical image analysis and diagnostics.

What can you tell other applicants if they want to apply to fortiss?

fortiss offers many opportunities for your own research and innovation ideas. Therefore, you can communicate your ideas from the outset that you would like to work on. Ideally, these topics then overlap with the current projects. In everyday work, it is important to work independently and to be able to assess what to do next, as every scientist is very specialized in his area.
