How can I feel very attractive physically
How to stay attractive with 50 plus
The hair is gray, the face is wrinkled, the eyelids are victims of gravity. A look in the mirror shows: You are no longer 20. But what is the problem with getting older? From the age of 50, new standards of beauty simply apply.
Young and beautiful? Old and ugly? The pairs of terms seem to be inseparable. Because for many people, beauty and youth are synonymous. "People like to confuse one with the other," says Frieder Lang, geriatric psychologist at the University of Erlangen. Our image of age and our idea of beauty are actually very different things.
Women are getting older, men are getting more attractive?
The prejudice that beauty continuously decreases with age applies especially to women. "While women perceive aging as ugly, men initially consider it to be more attractive." This has been proven by numerous studies, says Lang. Researchers call this phenomenon the "Double Standard of Aging".
In old age, neatness and style make you particularly beautiful
The psychologist, however, contradicts the thesis that this is a real problem for all women. Most see aging as a challenge. You notice that after a certain age the standards shift. "Attractiveness is no longer measured by looking as young as possible, but by the well-groomed appearance," says Lang. Cosmetics, style and care come to the fore.
New standards: if you didn't like yourself at 20, you could love yourself at 50
Many women who did not conform to the current ideal of beauty in their youth even experience these new standards as liberating. "We know from numerous studies: Anyone who was dissatisfied with their own appearance at 20 or 30 can suddenly feel very attractive at 50 or 60", explains the psychologist.
Confident aging: the target group "50 plus"
Style consultants, women's magazines and beauty blogs have discovered the "50 plus" target group for themselves over the last few years. They promote a self-confident approach to aging. "The number 50 is no longer the fear factor it was ten years ago," says style expert Martina Berg, who runs the fashion and lifestyle blog "Lady 50plus". Her credo: "If you've been in the world a little longer, it's important that you get the best out of yourself and not chase after some youthful ideal."
Older women should not aim to swap clothes with their daughters; they are allowed to emphasize their own strengths. Everyone has them - regardless of size 38 or 48. "Even with curves or short legs, you can achieve a lot with the right cut," says Berg.
Courage to use color, but less is more
When it comes to clothing, the style consultant generally recommends more courage to use color. The lips can also use a stronger red. Basically, you shouldn't overdo it when applying make-up in everyday life. "Less is more here. You should avoid glitter and glamor." Berg advises lipstick, mascara and blush. If you don't like make-up, you can also bring a little color to your face with tanning powder. Very important for the style advisor: don't let yourself go. A certain physical fitness and of course health are important prerequisites for beauty in old age.
Cosmetic surgery is no longer a taboo
But even with the best care you cannot make wrinkles disappear. Some women manage to accept them as a sign of maturity. Others struggle with it. Modern medicine offers possibilities for those who are very bothered by their own wrinkles. Cosmetic surgery is much more natural today than it used to be. "The general acceptance among the population has changed," says Riccardo Giunta, chief physician for plastic surgery at the University of Munich Clinic.
Beware of unrealistic expectations
The patients now come to the consultation hour very self-confident and enlightened. The Vice President of the Federal Association of Plastic Surgeons, however, warns against unrealistic expectations: "With aesthetic operations, you can alleviate individual signs of aging and achieve a significantly fresher appearance." A 70-year-old will certainly not become a 20-year-old.
Carefully examine your choice of plastic surgeon
Since the term "cosmetic surgeon" in Germany, unlike the "plastic surgeon", is not a protected professional title, Giunta urgently advises you to take a close look at the doctor's qualifications beforehand. A reputable surgeon can be recognized by the fact that he has completed several years of advanced training, explains precisely the opportunities and risks and does not play down the procedure. Every general anesthetic carries a certain risk. When incisions are made, vessels and nerves can be injured, scarring and wound infections can occur.
Nice despite wrinkles
Even those who only allow hyaluronic acid to be injected into them to plump up individual areas of the face a little, must know that the effect disappears after six to seven months, as the body absorbs the substance. "And if you fill in too much, you create unnatural faces that look like an inflated balloon," explains Giunta. The key is to strike a good balance between replenishing and tightening.
And an operation is not the right thing for everyone, says the surgeon: "An old person can be very beautiful, even if he has a lot of wrinkles."
