What does 200 GB mean in a computer

How much data volume do I need?

Andreas Hitzig

Telephone providers are delivering more and more data for the money. We'll show you how much data volume Netflix and Co. need and what interesting options there are for frequent surfers.

EnlargeO2 offers LTE-Allnet-Flats with monthly data volume included.

In autumn 2016, O2 ushered in a new generation of contracts with the "Free" tariffs. You surf the first 1, 10, 20 or 25 GB each month at LTE speed, after which you can still use data transfer rates of up to 1000 kbit / s. The question arises: Do you have to log your smartphone or tablet into your home WiFi at all, or is the GB you have enough for a whole month? We have analyzed the most important services on the Internet according to their data consumption and also name interesting tariff options for frequent surfers.

Whatsapp Messenger

“Whatsapp” is one of the most frequently used applications on most smartphones. The exchange of texts and images was the beginning, today you can use it to make phone calls, video chats and send voice messages. Due to the wide range of uses, the actual data consumption is very different. When only transferring texts, you need around 1 KB of data for 200 characters. A character can be a letter, a number, a special character, but also an emoticon. If you extrapolate this accordingly, you can send a total of 1 million messages with 200 characters with 1 GB of data volume.

A little more data is used if you regularly send pictures or videos. Before sending, "Whatsapp" compresses the images very heavily to a size between 60 and 90 KB. With a data volume of 1 GB, at least 11,000 images can be sent.

Voice messages and phone calls take between 800 KB and 1 MB per minute. This gives you at least 1000 minutes of conversation that you can have with 1 GB of data. If you not only want to hear your counterpart, but also see them, around five times the amount of data is required. But this is still enough for over 200 minutes of video messages.

You should exercise a little caution when sending videos via "Whatsapp". Messenger generally regulates sending to a maximum size of 16 MB, which allows you to send at least 60 videos.

Facebook Messenger

The “Facebook Messenger” is particularly popular with Facebook users and now has a range of functions similar to “Whatsapp”. When transmitting texts and images, the differences between the two services in terms of data consumption are manageable. Significantly greater differences become clear in the case of language: Here, the “Facebook Messenger” is significantly more economical without major deviations in quality being visible. He only needs a little less than half of the data for a minute of voice messages or phone calls - around 350 KB per minute. With 1 GB of data volume, you can make calls for around 2850 minutes per month, which is almost two days of continuous calls.

Slightly higher values are achieved with video telephony: Here, between 6 and 8 MB per minute of data volume are required. You can also use it for at least 125 minutes of video telephony per month.

Music streaming services

Thanks to the numerous streaming services for music, it is now easy to hear exactly the track you want on the go, without having to download it beforehand. The best-known and most widespread representatives in this type of service are, besides Spotify and Deezer, the competitors of Amazon, Google and Apple.

All services offer you several quality levels for downloading the pieces of music when you are out and about, but also in WLAN. With Spotify you have the distinction between normal, high and extreme quality. In the table below you can see the individual quality levels, the associated bit rates, the data volume per hour and the number of hours that you can listen to your favorite music with 1 GB. Incidentally, Spotify uses the "Automatic" setting as standard and uses the existing connection to determine the optimal data rate.

A similar variance in bit rates can be found with Deezer. The worst quality level starts at 128 kbit / s in the free version. With this you use around 58 MB per hour and with 1 GB you can listen to around 18 hours of music. As with Spotify, the highest quality level in the premium subscription has a bit rate of 320 kbit / s.

EnlargeFootball fans will probably need more data volume soon.

Amazon Music also offers you three different streaming qualities in the settings, but leaves open which bit rates are hidden behind them. The only information that Amazon provides about a sampling rate is the average value of 256 kbit / s. In direct comparison to Spotify, the value is between high and extreme. Based on this, you need around 115 MB per hour. With 1 GB of data volume, you can listen to a good nine hours of music on Amazon Music.

Apple also offers its music samples in the same way as Amazon Music with a maximum bit rate of 256 kbit / s. Google is the only provider to differentiate in its "Play Music" app between mobile use and that within the WLAN and offers two different controls for the quality levels. However, there are no sources that translate the quality designations low, medium and high into concrete bit rates. The only information available on the Google website is that the maximum bit rate is 320 kbit / s, as is the case with Spotify and Deezer.

Video streaming services

EnlargeAmazon Video uses four different streaming qualities.

Significantly more bandwidth is of course required if you want to watch videos from one of the streaming services on the go. At this point we have taken a closer look at the services of Amazon, Netflix, Maxdome and Sky for you.

Amazon offers a total of four different streaming qualities in its app, which are titled "Data Saver", "Good", "Better" and "Optimal". In an exemplary manner, the approximate data consumption that is due for the corresponding streaming quality is also reported directly in the overview. More on this in the table on the next page.

Maxdome basically offers you the choice between SD and HD quality at the start of the call, although both variants are not always available. Around 2 Mbit / s are required for SD quality, and around three times the amount of data for HD quality. The "Maxdome" app generally does not work in the cellular network, unless you access the offer via an LTE or UMTS hotspot. This is certainly also intended to protect the user, since around 900 MB of data are required per hour in SD format, or 2.7 GB for HD quality.

EnlargeNetflix indicates - the data consumption for the streaming quality.

The consumption of Netflix is not quite as high. Here, too, you can specify which data quality should be used directly in the app settings. There are usually three options to choose from: low, medium and high. The data consumption at Netflix is around 300 MB per hour for the lowest data quality, which corresponds to a data rate of around 0.67 MBit / s. In the medium quality, 700 MB per hour are required and in the highest quality 3 GB for HD or 7 GB for films and series that are available in UHD.

With Sky Go, films, series and also live broadcasts are offered in SD and HD quality, similar to Maxdome. A soccer game in HD resolution has a data consumption of 1 MB per second, which leads to a data consumption of around 3.6 GB per hour. In SD quality, the data consumption is about half as much. In this case, around 1.8 GB of data volume are used for one hour of transmission.
