How to Fix Master Boot Record in Windows 10
The Master Boot Record (MBR) is a special boot sector at the beginning of your system partition. The MBR informs the startup process of what should follow, e.g. B. partition layouts, sizes, file systems, etc. An MBR usually also contains a small executable code that forwards the startup process to the actual operating system and lands you in Windows.
Unfortunately, the MBR is not infallible. It can get corrupted, damaged, or just go away due to various reasons. This makes Windows 10 installations prone to errors. That said, there are several effective ways to repair the Windows Master Boot Kit. If one fix doesn't work for your system, try the next.
1. Startup Repair via Windows Automatic Repair
When you first start your Windows 10 system, it should detect a problem and go into automatic repair mode. The screen reads Your PC did not start properly. Choose from here Advanced options> Troubleshooting> Startup Repair.
The Windows 10 Startup Repair Tool is fully automated. However, it will take a long time to complete, but it should fix your Windows 10 MBR issues.
2. Command prompt via Windows Automatic Repair
If the Windows 10 Startup Repair process doesn't fix your MBR problem, or you prefer a faster, more direct approach To repair your system, you can use Command Prompt through Automatic Repair. If your system encounters a problem and the Automatic Repair screen appears, select Advanced options> Troubleshoot> Command Prompt.
You will use the Bootrec.exe tool to repair the corrupted MBR. Bootrec has a number of commands that can be used to restore the startup process after problems and is already included with your Windows 10 system as part of the basic installation.
Art bootrec.exe / fixmbr and press Enter. Then tap bootrec.exe / fixboot and press Enter. You should see that The operation completed successfully under each command. If you don't see the completion message and you get an error instead, enter bootrec.exe / rebuildbcd and press Enter. The "rebuildbcd" command attempts to rebuild your system's Boot Configuration Data (BCD).
Unfortunately, that doesn't always work the first time. In this case, Microsoft suggests exporting the BCD storage (the place where your startup data is stored) and recreating it from scratch. Sounds scary, but only lasts a brief moment.
Enter the following commands one by one:
The export and restore process should completely fix your MBR problems.
Users who are still using Windows 7 or an earlier version can also use the bootrec.exe / scanos Command. This command looks for old BCD settings and repairs them.
If you can't access Command Prompt through Automatic Repair
Some users will find that Windows 10 Automatic Repair does not show up when they want it. In this situation, you will need to use your Windows installation media to boot into repair mode.

However, there is one more workaround you can try if you don't have a Windows installation USB drive or CD. You can give your system the appearance of a startup failure by turning it on and then turning it off again when the Windows logo appears.
After repeating this process three times in quick succession, the automatic repair will trigger. Please note that this is not suitable for all users depending on the system status.
3. Fix MBR issues in Windows with GParted Live
GParted Live is a bootable Linux distribution with a focus on partition management. However, you can also work on your Windows partitions. Or do you want to reallocate space? We'll show you how to use Windows 10's partition manager. Read More To complete this part of the tutorial you will need a working alternative system.
Download GParted Live
First of all, you need to download GParted Live. There are two versions. If you have a 32-bit system, choose this i686.iso Execution. This version works on both 32- and 64-bit systems, but with some restrictions. If you have a 64-bit system (and you are sure it's a 64-bit system!) Download this amd64.iso Execution.
Write GParted Live to bootable media
Next, you need to write the disc image to some type of bootable media. I'm using an 8GB USB flash drive, but a smaller drive will work as well as a suitable disc. You'll also need to download UNetbootin. Open UNetbootin. Choose Disk image Then click the three-dot icon at the bottom of the control panel to navigate to the GParted Live ISO.
Select the ISO and press Open. Then select the USB flash drive you want to write GParted Live to and press OK. Then remove the bootable media and shut down your system.
Boot into GParted Live
Insert the GParted Live bootable media with a corrupted MBR into the system. Turn on the system and press the boot process shortcut key for your system to bring up the boot device selection menu (e.g. F11 on my PC and laptop). You should recognize the GParted Live media as a possible bootable source. Select it and let the media load. You have to make a few minor choices, such as: B. Language and operating mode.
Using GParted Live and TestDisk to freeze the MBR
After the GParted Live environment loads, open a terminal window and enter the following sudo fdisk -l and press Enter. This command lists all drives and partitions that are currently available in your system. Now open a new terminal window, enter Test disk, then select No protocol.
Next, you will be asked which hard drive you want to repair. Select your drive and continue.
Now select the type of partition table. In this case, choose Intel / PC partitionand press Enter.
Choose Analyze, then Fast Search.
TestDisk searches your drive for existing and previously deleted partitions. The scanning process may take a few minutes depending on the size of the drive. Your primary system partition may be identified. It looks a little confusing, but you want GParted Live to list all of your system partitions.
We are looking for the partition with a "*“-This is yours Primary bootable partition and that's where the corrupt MBR lurks. If the scan does not show all partitions, select Deeper search. GParted also provides a short list of information in case any errors occur.
If all of your partitions are shown with the correct flags (like bootable, extended, logical) then (and only then!) Write to the partition table. If the markings are incorrect, use the arrow keys to toggle them. In the following screenshots, for example, the first image shows a drive with a double second partition ([Partition 2]). Scroll through the partition and press P. Displays the files found on this partition.
The first duplicate partition is bad, as seen from the File system cannot be opened. File system appears to be damaged Embassy.
The second duplicate partition contains the list of file folders and is therefore the correct partition.
The flag for the first duplicate partition is then set to D. for delete while the second duplicate partition is set to L. for Logical: Restoring the partition and its data on the drive.
When you return to the TestDisk menu, select MBR code write a standard MBR to the hard disk and confirm.
Angry! You are done. You can close the terminal windows, log out of GParted Live, and shut down the system. Remove the GParted Live boot media and reboot the system.

Write the Boot Repair Disk to the bootable media
Next, you need to write the disc image to some type of bootable media. I'm using an 8GB USB flash drive, but a smaller drive will work as well as a suitable disc. You'll also need to download UNetbootin.
Open UNetbootin. Choose Disk image Then click the three dots icon at the bottom of the control panel to switch to the Boot Repair Disk ISO.
Select the ISO and press Open. Then select the USB flash drive that you also want to write as Boot Repair Disk and press OK. Then remove the bootable media and shut down your system.
Boot into the Boot Repair Disk
