Mental Wellbeing: What Is It?

Mental wellbeing is also known as “mental health”. According to a definition by the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is the "state of well-being in which the individual can achieve his or her abilities, cope with normal life stresses, work productively and fruitfully, and is able to contribute to his or her community."

Sure, everyone experiences days when he or she is only in a moderate mood. In the case of psychological well-being, however, it is more about a long-term condition that can still fluctuate. It is often equated with luck. Research differentiates between two forms of well-being:

  • Hedonistic wellbeing
    According to the American psychologist Ed Diener, hedonistic (or subjective) well-being describes an accumulation of positive feelings with as few negative feelings as possible and satisfaction with life. The hedonistic well-being consists of the subjective, affective and cognitive evaluation of one's own life. The work situation, social environment, health and personal belongings are included in this assessment.
  • Mental wellbeing
    This mood is also known as “eudaemonic well-being”. According to Aristotle's idea, eudaemonia meant that someone could use his potential. According to the American psychologist Carol Ryff, people achieve a high level of psychological well-being when they can determine their own life and see a meaning in it. This is about well-being through self-actualization.

1. Self-acceptance

A point that is often difficult for women in particular. Namely, to accept yourself for who you are, with the quirks, but above all the amiable sides. Self-acceptance (or self-acceptance) refers to the characteristics of a person, to the appearance and also to one's own biography.

This includes accepting your own decisions and mistakes and not constantly scourging yourself for them. Those who are at peace with themselves can approach other people much more relaxed and forgive their inadequacies.

Self-acceptance does not mean that someone is perfect or that no improvement is necessary. But the deficit-oriented view is changed to a more realistic view of oneself. So someone can automatically radiate greater self-confidence.

2. Personal growth

It is made possible by a fundamental openness to new things. Anyone who maintains a curiosity in adult life shows a high degree of flexibility and is constantly learning new things. This building block of mental well-being is closely related to the design of one's own environment.

Because with the acquisition of new skills, you can influence areas that you want to change in a completely different way. At the same time, the opposite of this contributes to people remaining in their current situation and assuming the role of victims.

3. Meaning of life

The question of the meaning of life is one of the existential questions in the life of every person. It is all the more clear that psychological well-being is significantly reduced if someone perceives their life as meaningless. If you don't see meaning, you don't set goals and finally give up.

There is no such thing as one meaning, each person has to define it for himself. Ultimately, this also explains how completely different life models come about. For goal orientation it is always important that the intended goals are realistic. The latter is a typical sign of mental maturity.

4. Design of your own environment

The point here is to be able to influence the environment. This does not necessarily include being able to change things at your own discretion. Very few employees have complete freedom in all matters. Rather, it is about actively helping to shape living conditions. This requires a certain mindset. It helps to master even difficult situations and to be able to adapt.

5. Autonomy

What is meant is the ability to remain autonomous. The statements of other people have no absolute weight, as an autonomous personality remains true to itself and its own values. It is not about rigidity, but rather that someone can form their own opinion based on their own convictions and knowledge. This ability is especially important in situations where some pressure from others can easily be exerted by mood stimulation.

6. Positive relationships with others

The feeling of being able to rely on other people, to have trusting relationships, contributes greatly to psychological well-being. It shows that the person has an important level of attachment and empathy. Good relationships with other people contribute to joy and variety and strengthen your back, especially in difficult times.
