Why is the pH measured?

The pH value indicates how acidic or basic an aqueous solution is. The term is derived from the Latin names "pondus hydrogenii or" potentia hydrogenii (pondus = weight; potentia = force; hydrogenium = hydrogen).

pH <7 corresponds to a solution with an acidic effect
pH = 7 corresponds to a neutral solution
pH> 7 corresponds to an alkaline solution (basic effect)

However, this only applies to pure water and dilute solutions at 25 ° C. The pH value in different human body fluids is different. In the stomach, for example, there is an acidic pH value, and the pH value in the woman's vagina is also acidic to ward off pathogens. Blood has a pH of around 7.4 (see below), urine around 6 (5 to 9).

What do low values ​​mean?

Too low (acidic) pH (Acidosis) may indicate a diabetic coma, kidney disease (kidney weakness, tubular acidosis), poisoning (salicylates, methyl alcohol, glycol, etc.) or diarrhea. The pH value can also drop in the event of hunger, shock, lack of oxygen and breathing disorders. Persistent alcohol abuse can also lead to acidic pH.

 

What do high values ​​mean?

Too high a (basic) pH value (Alkalosis) may indicate vomiting, brain disorders, hormonal disorder (Conn syndrome), or shock. In addition, the pH value can rise with excessive breathing (hyperventilation), e.g. in the case of excitement or lack of oxygen. Treatment with water tablets (diuretics), hormones (mineralocorticoids) or osteoporosis medication (bicarbonates) can also lead to an increase in the pH value in the blood.
