New regulations for the Abitur: This is what they should look like in concrete terms

Due to the numerous inquiries about choosing a course in the upper secondary school, we have decided to publish the main new regulations here on February 1, 2017.

For the students who entered the upper level of the gymnasium in the school year 2017/18, some new regulations came into force on February 1, 2017.

Note: The following statements only include the new regulations, otherwise the previous regulations remain in place.

The new regulations concern:

  • the application of a new calculation model for Block I in the overall qualification, which, according to the agreement of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of June 16, 2016, will only include 40 half-year results instead of the previous 52,
  • the possibility of setting up an advanced course in biology,
  • the possibility of taking two natural sciences and two foreign languages ​​or three natural sciences and one foreign language or (as before) three natural sciences and two foreign languages.

This was communicated to the headmasters of the general high schools on November 10, 2016 via the school portal.

The following is new:

The old SOGYA (school regulations for grammar schools) generally applies to students who were already in the upper school level in the 2016/17 school year (current year 12). Only the application of the new calculation model (point 3 above) came into effect from 2017. This means that for the students of the current grade 12, the result of block I is already calculated according to the new model and only 40 half-year results are included.

Students of the current grade 12, which after the "old", i. H. would be better off with the current model, can request that the overall qualification be calculated according to the current "old" system.

The following obligation to provide evidence applies to pupils who entered grade 11 from the 2017/18 school year.

1. Occupancy

Advanced courses

Each pupil chooses advanced courses in two subjects from the offer of his school. In principle, the grammar schools offer the following advanced courses:

Advanced courses in art, chemistry or biology can only be offered at the grammar schools with the approval of the State Office for Schools and Education. In this case, the school offers the advanced course in art in place of the advanced course in history, and the advanced course in chemistry or biology in place of the advanced course in physics. If the school has set up an advanced course in history, the advanced course in art can also be approved. If the school has set up an advanced course in physics, the advanced course in chemistry and biology can also be approved.

This results in the following combinations of advanced courses:

  • German - continued foreign language
  • German - history
  • German - Physics
  • German - art
  • German - chemistry
  • German - biology
  • Mathematics - continued foreign language
  • Math - history
  • Mathematics - Physics
  • Mathematics - Art
  • Mathematics - Chemistry
  • Mathematics - Biology

Any foreign language started before grade 10 is a continued foreign language. The second advanced course subject, a continued foreign language, can be English, French, Italian, Latin, Polish, Russian, Spanish or Czech.

Basic courses

In principle, the following subjects are compulsory as a basic course in all semesters of the gymnasiale Oberstufe, unless they are taken as an advanced course or are replaced by another basic course subject in accordance with the replacement regulations:

  • German
  • mathematics
  • Art or music
  • a continued foreign language or the foreign language started in grade 10
  • another continued foreign language
  • history
  • Social Studies / Legal Education / Economics
  • geography
  • biology
  • chemistry
  • physics
  • Evangelical religion or Catholic religion or ethics
  • Sports

Every student can deviate

  • either basic courses in the subjects of biology, chemistry, physics and a continued foreign language with 3 hours or
  • Take basic courses in the subjects of continued foreign language with 3 hours (or the foreign language started in grade 10 with 3 hours), another continued foreign language with 2 hours and two of the subjects chemistry, biology or physics.

The student can also take three natural sciences and two foreign languages ​​as a basic course subject. If two continued foreign languages ​​are taken as basic courses, the continued foreign language must be taken for 3 hours per week, which the student started later.

A foreign language begun in grade 10 must be taken as a basic course subject in the upper level of the gymnasium.

For students with a migration background who have attended lessons in their native language up to grade 10 as a substitute for the second foreign language, and for students with a migration background who have taken an assessment test and have not taken a second foreign language in grade 10, there is no need to enroll in a basic course subject that continues Foreign language (second foreign language).

The school can offer basic courses in astronomy, computer science, philosophy and other advanced foreign languages ​​as well as, with the approval of the State Office for Schools and Education, subject-related basic courses, if the possibilities of the school in question permit.

Replacement rules for basic courses

The basic course subjects geography or social studies / legal education / economics can be replaced by one of the basic course subjects astronomy, computer science, philosophy, another continued foreign language or by a basic course that connects subjects. The basic course subjects biology, chemistry or physics can only be replaced by taking a subject-related basic course predominantly related to natural sciences or computer science.

For students in advanced training, at the state high school Sankt Afra zu Meißen and at the Sorbian high school in Bautzen, special regulations apply to the choice of courses.

2. Submission: Determination of the overall qualification for the general higher education entrance qualification

The overall assessment, which is decisive for the award of the general higher education entrance qualification, consists of two blocks.

  • Block I comprises the services in the basic and advanced courses.
  • Block II comprises the achievements in the Abitur examination.

In Block I, the results of the individual course semesters are brought in as follows:

  1. the half-year results in the five Abitur examination subjects,
  2. if not already brought in by the Abitur examination subjects,
  • four semester results in a continued foreign language,
  • two semester results in one of the subjects art or music,
  • four semester results in history,
  • eight half-year results in two of the subjects biology, chemistry or physics (If students in the current year 11 have replaced one of the subjects biology, chemistry or physics with a subject-related basic course predominantly related to natural sciences or computer science, then the substitute subject can be introduced Students of the current grade 12 biology has been replaced by a subject-related basic course with a predominantly natural science area, this course can be introduced.),
  • two semester results in one of the subjects geography or social studies / legal education / economics
  • two semester results in the subject Evangelical Religion or Catholic Religion or Ethics

Overall need 40 semester results be introduced. At least one half-year course result must be submitted for each subject taken.

The other half-year results, which are to be included in the overall qualification, are determined by the student after consultation with their tutor or the senior level advisor after receiving the certificate for the course half-year 12 / II.

The Overall result of the points achieved in Block I. is calculated as follows:

In the sum of all semi-annual course results, the semi-annual results of the advanced course subjects are included twice, those of the basic course subjects are single. When it comes to the number of semester results, those of the advanced course subjects count twice. A result that is not a whole number is rounded, with n.5 always rounded up.

In block I at least 200 points must be achieved. No half-year result of a course taken may be 0 points. A maximum of 8 of the semi-annual course results to be submitted may be below 5 points, of which a maximum of 4 from advanced courses.
