After nine seasons and 202 episodes, "The X-Files" ended in 2002. Over a decade later, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully return to the television screen - to the delight of mystery fans. Especially since the FBI agents are played again by David Duchovny (55, "Californication") and Gillian Anderson (47, "The Fall"). Series maker Chris Carter, 59, has revived his cult series. He wrote the first episode of the tenth season himself and took the reins of direction himself. ProSieben will show the six new episodes from Monday, February 8, 2016, at 9:15 p.m.

What are the "X-Files" actually?

"The X Files" conquered audiences around the world in the 1990s and is considered to be the pioneer of the modern mystery genre. Series like "Lost", "Fringe" or "Supernatural" would probably not exist without the X-Files. The mix of science fiction, horror and crime thrills the audience. For nine years, the FBI agents Scully and Mulder investigated "the scary cases of the FBI" together, as the addition in the series title already announces. "Scary" means something like supernatural or extraterrestrial. Scully and Mulder were always on the lookout for the unearthly, extraterrestrial and paranormal phenomena. These included those who disappeared without a trace, inexplicable murders and much more. The great conspiracy theory hovered over all the consequences. The so-called mythology, a conspiracy in the highest government circles. Here, the politics of alien hushed up and intrigued on a large scale. The two sequels "The X Files - The Film", 1998, and "The X Files - Beyond Truth", 2008, could not really build on the success of the series.

The characters

FBI agent Fox Mulder believes in aliens himself. As a little boy, he had to watch his sister Samantha seemingly kidnapped by aliens. The rational doctor and FBI agent Dana Scully acts as his antithesis. Also on board again: Assistant Director Walter Sergei Skinner (Mitch Pileggi, 63). Also some supporting characters can be seen again: The smoker or cancer candidate (William B. Davis, 78) as well as the "Lone Gunmen", who actually blessed the time in the series: Richard "Ringo" Langly (Dean Haglund, 50), Melvin Frohike (Tom Braidwood, 67) and John Fitzgerald Byers (Bruce Harwood, 52). Newcomers include conspiracy theorist Tad O'Malley (Joel McHale, 44) and Agent Miller, played by Robbie Amell, 27.

What happened until now

In season nine, Mulder was in hiding for much of the time. Scully worries about their baby William. The little one masters telekinesis. One prophecy says that William is chosen to save humanity - but only if Mulder is alive. Should Mulder die, William would lead the aliens. This leads to a UFO cult kidnapping William. But it can be found again intact. In the season finale, Mulder leaves his hiding place. He wants to find secret documents on a military base that contain information about plans to colonize the earth by aliens. He is caught and arrested, sentenced to death for alleged murder, but is able to flee again. Together with Scully, he searches for the truth in New Mexico. In the final scene of the season, Mulder and Scully are together in a motel room in Roswell. In the last scene of the second movie, the two drive together in a boat towards an island.

Season ten

Without anticipating too much: The new miniseries takes place in the here and now. Scully and Mulder also had a long break from the X-Files. Both no longer work for the FBI and are no longer lovers. Instead, Scully has an admirer who openly shows his affection for her. She practices as a doctor, while Mulder was allowed to keep the house they once shared and vegetated in front of YouTube videos. Tad O'Malley (Joel McHale), a web TV host with a penchant for conspiracy theories, brings the two back together. He hires her on a mission: he wants to uncover the whole truth because he has new information about the alien conspiracy. These clues call into question everything the FBI agents believed they knew about the entanglements between the aliens and the US government. Key witness Sveta (Annet Mahendru, "The Americans") plays an important role in this. The pilot and the sixth episode deal with this mythology. They are originally called "My Struggle" and "My Struggle II", which translates as "My effort" or "My struggle". The four episodes in the middle are self-contained cases, "Monster of the Week" cases, so to speak.

Will there be more episodes?

The revived season includes only six episodes - a miniseries. What will happen afterwards is still completely open. "The X-Files" creator Chris Carter revealed in an interview with the "Hollywood Reporter" that he definitely has material for more cases. In addition, he has already written the script for a third feature film. Carter wants to wait until the responsible US broadcaster Fox approaches him. The TV bosses should definitely like the ratings in the USA, with 16 million viewers watching the season start. However, the critics weren't really euphoric about the comeback. So everything is possible.

German fans a little disgruntled

What the American fans do not care at all, caused the German fans to ignite in the run-up to the television broadcast: Agent Mulder has a new voice in the new episodes. But despite the fan petition, ProSieben is sticking to the new voice. "We have read the petition and are delighted at how passionately these fans are for" The X-Files ". Respect. Nevertheless, we cannot and do not want to accommodate your wishes. For editorial reasons, we have chosen the new speaker convinced that we have found a very good solution. The new episodes of "The X Files" have become really exciting - Mulder and Scully have lost none of their charm, "said a statement from ProSieben.
