Binaural Beats Sleep
A pilot study5 has investigated whether binaural beats in the delta wave range can lead to better sleep quality and sports performance in soccer players. 15 athletes were exposed to the beats for 8 weeks while they were sleeping. Each time they woke up, they felt questionnaires about how well they slept and how motivated they feel. The control group of 15 sports students did not hear beats but felt the same questionnaires.
After 8 weeks, an improvement in the perceived sleep quality of the soccer players could be observed. An increase in performance in sport was not recorded. To find out, the period of 8 weeks seems too short. There is a need for further research.
Learning binaural beats
Another study6 aimed to investigate the effect of binaural beats on long-term memory. Study participants were blindfolded so that they could only focus on auditory stimuli. After listening to beats from the beta (20 Hz) or theta frequency range (5 Hz) or white noise as a control condition, they had to solve tasks. In doing so, they had to remember things or recognize something.
The beats in the beta frequency range had most of the correct answers. The results suggest that waves in the beta range improve memory and may be used as a tool in learning.
Binaural Beats Depression or Stress
The extent to which binaural beats in the alpha range can provide relaxation and stress reduction was investigated in the following study7 explored. For this purpose, 102 test persons were divided into three groups: (1) audio reinforcement with binaural stimulation, (2) audio reinforcement without binaural stimulation and (3) no acoustic reinforcement.
Before and after a 20-minute stimulation, the physical relaxation reaction of the test subjects was measured in the form of heart rate, breathing rate and selected parameters of the heart rate variability. However, the results did not show any changes.
How dangerous are binaural beats?
