Which city has the first fire brigade?

Frankfurt am Main fire brigade

For a long time you could only start a career in the professional fire service after you had already completed training, mostly of a technical nature. Three years ago, the Frankfurt fire brigade offered a training course to become a so-called plant fire fighter for the first time: Immediately after graduating from secondary school or secondary school.

Factory firefighters were originally trained exclusively by industry; at the end there is an examination by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK); hence the name. The Frankfurt fire brigade decided as the first municipal professional fire brigade in Germany to also offer this option.

Now the training in Frankfurt is running together with the plant fire brigades in the area (airport, Infraserv Höchst, Infraserv Wiesbaden Evonik Darmstadt and Merck). Essential parts of the training take place for everyone in the Fire Rescue Training Center (FRTC), the Academy of the Frankfurt Fire Brigade.

And this is exactly where the first class together took their final exams this week; the 24 young firefighters then begin their service at the respective plant fire brigades - and those who have successfully participated as trainees in the Frankfurt fire brigade are civil servants at the Frankfurt fire and rescue stations.

The compact, three-year training course has it all: in the first one and a half years, the trainees learn manual skills, especially from metal and electrical engineering, wood processing and heating technology, but also knowledge of work organization, the creation and use of technical documents and the Use of communication and information systems. In the second half, everything revolves around fire fighting and rescue training: theory and practice in fire fighting and technical assistance (in the case of car accidents, for example), legal and medical principles.

As a growing city, Frankfurt will have a great need for new emergency services over the next few years. At the same time, the fire brigade sees the training course as an attractive offer for young people who are looking for a professional orientation after leaving school.
