You can read how much we like the console in the Xbox Series X review.

Buy Xbox Series X here Fans primarily want a specific model

Wanted to pre-order the Xbox Series X / S, but it didn't work? These dealers offer consoles.

You can buy the new Xbox models since November 10th, only the Xbox Series X is currently sold out almost everywhere or will not be delivered until November. The Xbox Series S, on the other hand, is still available from various retailers.

With the Xbox Series S, Microsoft is releasing a second model within its own new generation of consoles. It's about 60 percent smaller and 200 euros cheaper than the Xbox Series X. Above in the gallery you can see both consoles in comparison.

Xbox Series X Price: How Much Does the Console Cost?

The Xbox Series X costs 500 euro. For the Xbox Series S, Microsoft only requires 300 Euro. You can buy the console here.

Because demand exceeds supply, some retailers also offer the consoles at higher prices. Especially on online marketplaces such as eBay, so-called scalpers sometimes sell at exorbitant prices. They just want to earn from reselling. It is best to refrain from supporting these sellers and rather be patient. The consoles will also be offered again at normal prices.

If a trustworthy retailer offers a console for 20 to 50 euros more, but adds accessories or a game, then you can take advantage of this offer.

Xbox Series X: Controller is the "best gamepad" according to Microsoft

Probably the most important accessory for a new console is the Controller. The Xbox Series X gamepad has been completely redesigned, but its layout is still clearly reminiscent of the Xbox One controller. However, the new pad should fit much better in small hands and the shoulder bags offer your fingers more support, according to the developers. A USB-C port and a share button for sharing content are installed as standard.

You can also connect the Xbox Series X controller to the Xbox One, your PC or mobile devices (Android or iOS). According to Microsoft, you can charge the gamepad with batteries or rechargeable batteries. You have to buy the latter separately, however. With the charging function of the Xbox Series X controller, you have both options to choose from.

The Xbox Series X hardware specs

As the successor to the Xbox One, the Xbox Series X significantly better hardware, higher quality components and you benefit from all kinds of new features and more performance. As a result, according to Microsoft, the Xbox Series X is even able to play games with a high resolution 4K graphics and 120 FPS (Frames per second). The graphical representation of Xbox Series X content clearly surpasses that of the Xbox One and other consoles that have appeared so far. Thanks to the 120 frames per second, your games run much more smoothly, which means that image jolts do not occur even with complex games.

For the display of 4K resolution at 120 FPS, however, you also need a corresponding television. The TV set should offer the HDMI standard 2.1 and a refresh rate of at least 120 Hertz. In a separate article we will help you find the perfect TV for next-gen consoles.

Another important technical feature is Ray tracing. Put simply, it is a type of lighting in virtual dimensions, for example in video games. Shadows, light sources and graphic structures are represented much more realistically using this technology. Game worlds on the Xbox Series X could therefore look much more realistic than ever on any other console. The difference between ray tracing and gaming is demonstrated by Microsoft using the game Minecraft.

Microsoft has also already announced the hardware components built into the Xbox Series X. Thanks to the AMD CPU (Zen 2 series and RDNA 2 architecture), the Xbox Series X achieves four times more processor performance than the Xbox One. In this context, Microsoft often speaks of 12 TeraFLOPSthat the console should have. This is the theoretical computing power of a processor per second. In practice, however, the performance can deviate from this maximum value, for example when you play certain games or perform special actions. Basically, the Xbox Series X should work much faster and more effectively than its predecessor thanks to the built-in hardware.

Even one 8K resolution should be able to display the Xbox Series X, although according to Microsoft the console "only" offers a 4K resolution with 60 frames per second by default. In return, you benefit from a faster SSD (data storage) with a terabyte of internal storage. Thanks to this, you play Xbox Series X games with shorter loading times.

So the memory of the Xbox Series X is expandable

The one terabyte storage space offers you plenty of space for your Xbox Series X games. Since the new software also requires more storage space than Xbox One games, for example, your internal memory may not be sufficient in the long run. Fortunately, it can be easily made into memory card-style Xbox Series X memory cards expand by plugging the separately available accessories into the back of the console. This is a big advantage over the PS5, which you have to open to expand the SSD storage.

However, the memory modules cost 240 euros each, almost as much as an Xbox Series S.

But you still have another option for memory expansion. You can also connect external USB 3.1 and USB 3.2 hard drives to the Xbox Series X. However, you cannot play Xbox Series X games on it, because they only work if you have stored them either on the internal console memory or on one of the aforementioned memory cards from Microsoft. You can still play your old Xbox One and Xbox 360 games via external hard drives, for example.

PS5 or Xbox Series X - which console is better?

If you compare the technical data of the Xbox Series X and the PS5, you will see some significant differences. However, analysts and fans also disagree about which console is the "better" one in the end. Some believe that the Xbox Series X is clearly superior to the PS5, others describe Sony's new PlayStation as the better overall package.

The Xbox Series X could have an advantage over the PS5 in the "Quick Resume" function. It enables you to switch to selected apps and games directly and without long loading times. So you don't have to switch back to the home menu as you did with the Xbox One and start the application from there.

Xbox Series X: New Games and Smart Delivery

With the new generation of consoles you can expect too many new Video games. Microsoft will publish them specifically for the Xbox Series X, but many of the new titles should also be playable on Xbox One and PC. Microsoft calls this feature Smart delivery: You buy the game for the new Xbox and can then play it on other compatible consoles and platforms (PC and Xbox One) at no additional cost. Elsewhere, we'll tell you which Xbox games are compatible with Smart Delivery.

Since you can not only play the games on Xbox Series X, according to Microsoft there are no real exclusive games for the launch of the Xbox Series X. Nevertheless, the company is increasingly trying to get Microsoft-exclusive games that you will not find on PS5 or for example play on Nintendo Switch.

To this end, Microsoft has bought many exclusive developer studios that only develop games for Microsoft platforms. This includes, for example, the Studio Ninja Theory. It is developing the game Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 for the Xbox Series X.

You should actually jump into the new Halo Infinite for the console release, but the title has been postponed to 2021.

Backward compatibility for Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Xbox games

In addition to all of these games, the Xbox Series X is also backwards compatible. Backward compatibility is also a standard feature of the Xbox One, so Microsoft is continuing this strategy in the new generation of consoles.

While you can play Xbox and Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One thanks to this feature, the Xbox Series X goes one step further: Thanks to backward compatibility, you can play both Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games here enjoy. The Xbox Series X is backwards compatible with all Xbox consoles. However, only games that Microsoft has confirmed for backward compatibility will run.

However, since the graphics of these games often no longer meet today's standards, your older titles are displayed in better quality on the Xbox Series X, i.e. with a higher frame rate and higher resolution.

The Xbox Series S does not display backward compatible games as well as the Xbox Series X. Although there are higher frame rates, Auto HDR and faster loading times, there are no high resolutions as on Xbox Series X and Xbox One X. The games only run as Xbox One S versions.

Accessories, connections and compatible headsets

You can connect many additional devices to the Xbox Series X to enhance your gaming experience. For example, you can connect all controllers, arcade sticks and gaming steering wheels on your Xbox One to the new Microsoft console. Your old gaming headsets don't work quite as smoothly. You can connect most models to the Xbox Series X, but not those that you plug in via an optical audio output. The Xbox Series X doesn't have that.

All important connections of the Xbox Series X

  • three USB 3.2 ports
  • a power cord connector
  • a LAN connection
  • one HDMI 2.1 output
  • a slot for memory cards on the back

But since many popular headsets require a corresponding audio output, Microsoft is working on a solution. The company is working with various technology manufacturers on updates with which you can also use their headsets on the Xbox Series X via USB. So you should be able to connect the popular gaming headsets from Astro Gaming to the Xbox Series X right on time for the release.

Microsoft also wants to continue the various game services in the new generation of consoles. On the Xbox Series X you also benefit from the advantages of Games with Gold, the extensive Xbox Game Pass with over 100 games at a fixed monthly price and the Free Play events.

VR rumors on Steam point to virtual reality games

So far only a rumor is that you can also play in virtual reality on the Xbox Series X. Although Microsoft increasingly denied rumors about VR compatibility of the Xbox Series X, HP, Valve and Microsoft announced new VR glasses in March 2020.

Unfortunately, so far there is only a short teaser about the VR glasses on Steam, information about the compatible platforms, the price and the release is not yet available. Nevertheless, we think it is possible that the VR glasses will also enable VR games on the new console at some point. This is supported by a statement by Xbox boss Phil Spencer, who told the media portal Stevivor that VR is currently not an issue, but that this feature could come at some point.
