# How do I calculate the network bandwidth

Preliminary remark: In the technical field, the bandwidth was initially mainly used to identify the width of a frequency band. In the meantime, bandwidth is also applied to data transmission rates and here too often in the meaning of "maximum data rate" because the lower limit value is usually 0. The following "calculators" allow various calculations and conversions relating to bandwidth, throughput, speed and subnets.

#### Remarks

• FCS = Frame Check Sum = check information for a frame
• 1The frame size must be between 64 and 1518 bytes (normal Ethernet frames) or between 64 and 1522 bytes (VLAN tagged frames)!
• 2The effective bandwidth (Bw) is calculated as follows:
Total bandwidth - (Preamble Bw + Inter Frame Gap Bw + FCS Bw + Ethernet Headers Bw).
• 31 month = 30 days

The overhead for Ethernet II is a maximum of 42 bytes, which are composed as follows:

• 12 bytes Inter Frame GAP (minimum distance between two consecutive frames)
• 7 bytes preamble
• 1 byte start frame delimiter
• 6 bytes destination MAC address
• 6 bytes source MAC address
• 2 bytes type field
• 4 bytes VLAN tag field (optional)
• 4 bytes frame check sum (FCS)

### Bandwidth calculator
