What if cars walked on water?
Scratching ice: This is how car windows become ice-free
If you don't have a garage, you know the problem: As soon as the temperatures fall into the frosty range, the car windows freeze up at night. Then annoying ice scraping is the order of the day. These tips will make your job easier.
Important: The panes really have to be free, a small hole in the front pane is not enough. Otherwise there is a risk not only of serious accidents, but also of a fine. Problem-free ice scraping starts with the choice of the parking space. At night, the car should be parked with the windshield as close as possible to a house wall.
Prevention instead of scratching
Anyone who covers the pane with a sturdy film in the evening will have an easy time in the morning. In addition to special mats from the accessories trade, a cut-open garbage bag will also do. The film must lie close to the glass and is clamped to the doors. Disadvantage: At temperatures around zero degrees rainwater can run into the vehicle. Paper or cardboard is not suitable for covering. They can soften and freeze to the window.
Two old socks keep the side mirrors free of ice. Just put it on and take it off in the morning.
Dirty panes freeze over faster and more firmly than clean ones. If you let the windscreen washer run briefly before getting out, you will keep the windshield clear.
Be careful when scratching
The only thing that helps is scratching the side windows. Ice scrapers made of sturdy plastic have proven their worth. Metal blades, on the other hand, can quickly scratch the pane. Dirt on the windshield also acts like sandpaper. First break up thick ice with the grooved side of the ice scraper, then push away with the smooth edge at a flat angle. Long style scratches reduce pressure on the ice.
Scratching from the edge to the center of the pane prevents damage to the rubber seals. Working from top to bottom makes the job easier.
Chemistry thaws the ice
Liquid windscreen de-icers are designed to thaw the ice. In the case of thick frozen slices, they are hardly enough. Then only the combination of spraying and scratching will help. In any case, the agents need some time to take effect. They are also quite expensive.
No alternative is hot water, because the temperature shock can tear the car window. Water at room temperature is sufficient for a thin layer of ice. Simply fill a large bottle in the evening and leave it in the apartment.
Do not allow the engine to warm up
No matter how you remove the ice from the windows, the motor has to stop working. Allowing it to warm up while stationary generates unnecessary exhaust gases, is harmful to the engine according to ADAC and can be punished with a fine.
Protect windshield wipers
Often the windshield wipers freeze up too. Anyone who tries to use force to loosen them risks tearing the rubber. Therefore, carefully separate it from the window and spray some de-icer on the rubbers beforehand. If the windscreen wipers are on the cover film, which keeps the windshield free of ice, they can be easily removed.
After driving off, humidity tends to freeze onto the windshield again. Briefly actuating the windscreen washer system ensures a clear view again. Caution: There must be sufficient frost protection in the washing water. To prevent the window from fogging up from the inside, it is advisable to switch on the air conditioning for a short time and direct the air flow against the window. If the heating has become warm after a while, also direct its air upwards first.
