Shaping underwear is making a comeback under the name Shapewear. However, the “Kassensturz” test shows that most models do not contribute to the ideal figure. Some even have a significantly unfavorable effect on body shape.

The bodice is dead, long live the shapewear. The trend of body shaping underwear comes from America. The super elastic garments create a flat stomach, a firm bottom and a slim silhouette. And they are invisible under clothing. At least that is what the providers promise.

«Kassensturz» took the test: Can shapewear actually improve the figure, as the advertising promises? In the test were seven models in short slip form - they are supposed to shape the hip and abdominal region - and five models with legs that also shape the thighs.

Effective briefs are uncomfortable

The first test was about suitability for everyday use. Are the tested models comfortable enough to wear for a few hours? Five test persons wore each “shape” for at least eight hours. They rated the suitability for everyday use of each pair of underpants (for test criteria see below, “This is how it was tested”).

The five women found great differences. Her conclusion: “Either the underwear is shaping or it is comfortable. Both do not work together. " Especially putting on and taking off the tight underwear was a challenge. With the narrower models, going to the toilet was therefore uncomfortable.

Models with a leg shape better

A second test should show whether the underwear actually shapes the body as promised. The five women each wore the models under a dress. The dress was so tight that every little cushion and dent was visible. Three experts assessed the shaping effect. The jury consisted of the experts Beata Sievi, corset designer, Susanne Noller, Head of the Fashion Textile School Zurich and Bettina Steiner from the costume department of Swiss television.

Basically, models with legs performed better than models in slip form. The latter often showed seams on the buttocks and hips. “There are models that deform the body in a negative sense. The pressure on the hips is so great that the thighs are pushed out unfavorably, ”says Corsettière Beata Sievi. Only two legless models were enough for a "sufficient" note.

The experts

As members of the jury, three experts assessed the shape and quality of the Shape underwear:
• Beata Sievi, corset designer for the Entrenous label.
• Susanne Noller, Head of the Fashion Department at the Textile School Zurich
• Bettina Steiner, costume department of Swiss television

Various providers have commented on their “unsatisfactory” results. Globus is removing “Magic High Rise Supporting Brief” (grade 2.9) “regardless of the test result” from the range, while the test result of “Maidenform Hi Waist Brief” is “inexplicable”. Triumph writes “Kassensturz”, with “Amazing Sensation Highwaist Panty” (grade 3.5) the focus is on fashion requirements, which is why it does not perform well in the “Kassensturz” rating “with a focus on functionality”. Finally, about Maddison, Manor writes that “Shape Highwaist Slip” intentionally only has a slight shaping effect, which is reflected in the test result. C&A did not comment.

Some shape pants are effective

The jury also assessed the workmanship and material of the products. Bettina Steiner complains about thick seams and fabrics. Often times the dress would stick to the underwear and form wrinkles. “But there are also those made of thin material. They are nice and slippery so that a dress can easily fall over them, ”says Steiner.

The jury not only relied on their eyes, they also measured the models in order to assess the shaping effect. "The size differences with and without shapewear are small," says fashion specialist Susanne Noller. "However, certain models actually emphasize the feminine forms beautifully."

“Ellen Amber Women's Panty” failed completely when it came to the long johns. The wearing comfort and the shape of the Migros model are appealing, but the seams on all five copies in the test opened. This led to the devaluation to a grade of 2.0. Migros writes that holes could only form “with the use of great force”, and that this error was not known from internal tests or complaints.

A test winner for every budget

Three models - all with legs - impressed both the jury and testers and received an overall rating of 5.0. They shape well, are comfortable and hardly visible under the dress.

"Retro Sensation Panty L01" by Triumph for CHF 59.90 received the best mark for the shape effect. The experts also agreed that Sensation Panty was the highest quality and most beautifully processed item of clothing in the test. “Frau” pays for the high resilience with laborious dressing and undressing. If you wear this underwear for a long time, it can become uncomfortable.

“Flexees” by Maidenform (CHF 89.90, Globus) have a worse shape effect than the Triumph model, but are more comfortable to wear. Incidentally, the identical Maidenform “Cellulite Highwaist” model is available at Migros for CHF 39.80. With the same rating, “Thinstincs Mid-Tigh” from Spanx is by far the most expensive item in the test (119 francs, Globus, Jelmoli and specialist shops). It doesn't swing out of the way anywhere, but it also has hardly any disadvantages: good shape effect, beautiful workmanship and comfortable to wear.

But the same applies to the three test winners: Always try on the underwear before buying. This is the only way to judge whether the laundry actually has the effect you want.

So was tested

  • How suitable for everyday use are the twelve shapewear pieces in the test? Five women of normal body size wore the shapewear - each product for one day - and then kept a detailed record: Is the laundry comfortable (after 1, 4 and 8 hours)? Do the degrees cut in? Do you sweat in it? How easy is the «Shape» to put on and take off? Do you actually feel slimmer?
  • A second test should show whether the underwear actually shapes the body as promised. A three-person jury assessed this criterion. The five women presented the twelve models to the jury, each wearing a simple red dress.
  • The jury also assessed the workmanship and material of the shape underwear: seams, ends, decorations, as well as the quality and thickness of the material.
