Why is my Telstra number not working

Activate Telstra prepaid SIM

Register cheap prepaid cards in Australia - step by step!

On a trip to Australia, you can use a Telstra prepaid card to receive inexpensive mobile internet (also via LTE) and optional telephony. But many shy away from the necessary registration or activation of the prepaid card. This is very easy! We'll show you how you can get started surfing in less than 10 minutes.

For this we need three things. Firstly, Internet access, e.g. via the hotel WiFi. Second, the passport and the address of the first hotel for your stay in Australia. Here we go!

Note: The databases of the immigration authorities obviously only update after 1-2 days. If you start the registration too quickly, you will fail at the last point, which compares the data made with the VISA authority. So it is best to wait 1-2 days for activation.

Step 1: initiate activation

First, go to the Telstra activation page at the following Internet address www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/activate

Here we select “Pre-Paid” - the other menu item only applies to contract tariffs for local residents. Start the activation process by clicking on “Activate online now”.

Step 2: Fill in the necessary data

First of all, new customers are asked to select a prepaid option with "Select a Pre-Paid option". Please mark “I'm activating a new service” and confirm by clicking “Next”. Telstra now asks you to enter the service number, which is located on the back of the starter kit together with the "SIM serial".

The next question Telstra wants to know is whether the Pepaid tariff is used for private or business purposes. Here we choose the former, because business customers need data that you as a holidaymaker do not have.

This is followed by the question “Are you a new or existing Telstra customer?”. In the pull-down menu we select “New customer”. Now enter your name, date of birth and email address and continue. With "Do you hold an Australian Driver's License?" please state "no".

What is important now is the information under “Provide your current address”. Since we are only on vacation, there is of course no fixed address. However, Telstra explicitly allows the address of the first hotel to be given.

Now it's time to identify. The Australians are known to be very strict about that. Therefore, the international passport and visa are asked for. Again, the name and date of birth must be entered.

You will also be asked for the passport number that was used at Australian Customs upon entry. It is important that activation is only possible AFTER entry into Australia and not before, because of the problem with the immigration database mentioned.

If there is an error at this point, your name has probably not yet been found in the authorities database. Try again a day later. Otherwise, if possible, we recommend going to the nearest Telstra Shop. As a rule, they will activate it for you free of charge as a goodwill service. The passport is then required again.

According to the nationality information, it is now time to choose the tariff ...

Step 3: Choosing the prepaid tariff

If you are still undecided, you will find an overview of the current Telstra prepaid offers here. For travelers, we recommend the medium-sized "Prepaid Extra" package for AU $ 50. After the verification and approval of the terms and conditions, a confirmation of the activation follows. The SIM should be ready for first use within the next 3-4 hours.
