What is the Most Recognized SCM Certification

The range of trainings and certifications for Scrum Masters is extensive. Reason enough to shed some light on the certification jungle and compare the two major certifications.

Basically, the first question that arises is what is the value of a certificate that is based on a two-day training course or that can be acquired entirely without training. The simple answer is: a little at first. Because in a two-day training only the basic knowledge can be imparted to start as a Scrum Master. It does not replace extensive training and certainly not several years of practical experience. A multiple choice test only asks for knowledge that has been learned by heart. You should be aware of that. The more differentiated answer is: A training provides an important first basis for approaching the topic of Scrum and for getting experience from experienced practitioners that cannot be found in the Scrum Guide or in most books on the topic. For many people this is also a good opportunity to find out for themselves whether they can familiarize themselves with the role of a Scrum Master or not.

Basically there are only two certifications that are internationally widespread and generally recognized: DenCertified Scrum Master® (CSM®) from the Scrum Alliance and theProfessional Scrum Master (PSM I) from Scrum.org. The two Scrum inventors Jeff Sutherland and Ken Schwaber are behind the respective certifications.

The most important features of both certifications:

In terms of content, both certifications are based on the Scrum Guide, which is regularly updated by the two founders and translated into countless languages by a hard-working community. Overall, the Scrum Alliance seems a bit more enterprising, which is probably the original reason why Ken Schwaber split off in 2009 and has since offered a second certification option with Scrum.org.

The exam for Certified Scrum Master is relatively easy and does not represent a major hurdle. In practical perception, however, the value of this degree also seems to suffer somewhat. But also that Professional Scrum Master, the examination of which is much more demanding, only provides information that the Scrum Guide has been learned by heart and that the basic principles have been understood. For the long-term success of a freshly baked Scrum Master, it is crucial to apply the newly acquired knowledge in practice as quickly as possible.

In addition to a large number of Scrum certifications, only two certificates remain, which are recognized worldwide and are also in general demand in Germany. At the same time, there are numerous other certification options that also guarantee solid training. Furthermore, there are many experienced Scrum Masters who have never received certification and who do excellent work in practice. Certification is therefore always a question of personal positioning. If certifications are regularly requested in the consulting business and in job advertisements, nobody needs to suffer from inferiority complexes who have not acquired a certificate and just want to work with Scrum.
