What are strengths?
Strengths are personal competencies and talents that consist of thoughts, skills and behaviors (so-called soft skills). If they are used, they will help you prove yourself in certain situations with other people and at work.
“What are your strengths?” Many do not find an immediate answer to this question. We only see our own weaknesses and inadequacies; only others have strengths. Nonsense! Behind this is a wrong perception of one's own positive qualities and abilities. Even an overview of the numerous and very different strengths that you can possess makes it clear that you also have some of them.
Strengths list: overview and examples
There are strengths in every area. These include personal characteristics that are particularly pronounced and also specific skills that you like and at which you are particularly good. In the following list of strengths we have summarized a large overview of many strengths for you. This includes both general strengths, but also lists with which strengths you score in different professions and industries:

Why don't we see our strengths?
With the seemingly endless possibilities for strengths, the question arises: Why don't we see them in ourselves? Behind this is an exaggerated self-criticism that leads to a distorted self-image. Reasons for the lack of awareness and appreciation of one's own strengths can be:
- Negative experiences
For example, if you had to hear over and over again as a child that he or she was not good enough, you often develop a low self-esteem and will have difficulties in later life in recognizing your own strengths.
- Incorrect adjustment
Some people fear that if they speak openly of their own strengths and show what they are excellent at, they could appear conceited or arrogant.
- Fleeting search
Strengths are often not recognized because they are only superficially searched for: “I'm not creative, I'm not artistically gifted either, my organizational talent is ok, but also not really great and I can't do anything with math - then I don't seem like any Having personal strengths… ”That’s how quickly the topic gets cut off.

When choosing a suitable profession or preparing for an interview, you are faced with the question: What are my strengths? You have to answer these not only for yourself, but also for HR managers in order to have a chance at the job. If you have found it difficult to find your own strengths so far, you should start with honest self-reflection and the following questions:
- Which activities am I really good at?
- What do I enjoy and what motivates me?
- Where do I get the greatest success?
- How did I achieve these successes?
- How do I deal with setbacks?
- Can I adapt quickly to a new environment?
More tips and tricks on how to find your strengths include:
- Ask your environment
Can't see your personal strengths yourself? Then you should involve friends, family and colleagues. Other people often see strengths in us that we are not even aware of. “What do these people particularly appreciate about me? What am I envied for? ”Take a close look at what others see as your greatest strength and compare this with your own assessment.
- Analyze hobbies
Often there is a connection between hobbies and strengths. In other words: Often you are particularly good at the things you like to do - be it through practice and experience or because you are a natural. Reflect on what you like to pass the time with and what strengths might be hidden in them.
- Consider challenges
How do you master challenges? We use our strengths in difficult situations. Are you particularly spontaneous and can you find a suitable solution quickly? Do you convey with good communication? Do you keep track of stress and chaos? The way you deal with problems reveals what you are good at.
- Use personality analyzes
Big Five, DISC profile, personality tests - all these concepts and personality analyzes help to identify one's own abilities. Such tests can give you clues that are worth a closer look.
- Keep a reflection journal
In contrast to the normal form, the reflection diary is not about noting the course of the day or one's own experiences. Rather, you use the diary for ongoing self-reflection. So that this happens systematically and sustainably, it makes sense to create a framework of questions and topics, for example:
What worked particularly well today?
Which skills did I use?
How did I feel about it?
What didn't work
Why didn't it work?
What was I dissatisfied with today and why?
If you continuously evaluate the appropriate answers, you will soon come closer to your strengths. A so-called success diary works in a similar way.
- Work on rehearsal
The methods presented so far may be too theoretical for people with a more practical disposition. In that case, you should choose a more practical path: a trial day, odd jobs, trial days or internships also help to find strengths. This option is particularly suitable for schoolchildren, students and graduates.
- Do a part-time job
Anyone who is tied to a full-time job and also wants to find strengths can discover and get to know new fields of work with a part-time job. Disadvantage of this method: Your employer has to approve the secondary job and it takes a lot of time.
- Educate yourself self-taught
You have no idea in which areas your strengths and talents could be hidden? Then you should do self-taught training: deal with new topics, learn about them and try them out. In this way you can quickly find out in which areas you are doing well and where on the other hand there are weaknesses.
- Have reflective discussions
You don't necessarily need a coach or mentor for this method. Good friends or your own partner will do just fine. The only requirement: the person you are talking to must be able to detach himself from his knowledge of you and adopt an observant attitude. This is the only way he or she can really help you reflect and support you with honest, perhaps uncomfortable feedback.
- Take a break
Regardless of whether you are taking an extended vacation or a sabbatical: Deliberately taken time-outs can give you the freedom you need to (re) discover your strengths. Of course, this only works if you actively deal with yourself during this time and try out new things.
- Do a coaching
Coaching can also help you find your talents and strengths. Coaches who specialize in potential and personal development are suitable for this. Together, your skills can be analyzed and put into relation. This helps to become aware of your own strengths.
Questioning individual skills
Discovering your own strengths is a process. That means: You won't find all the skills and potential after 10 minutes of pondering. Rather, you will have to deal with different areas continuously over a longer period of time. You can ask yourself specific questions about individual properties in order to better classify them. For example this:

Can you easily incorporate overtime?
Can you look at things with humor?
Can you laugh at yourself?
Or even cheer people up?
- Communication skills
Are you good at expressing yourself?

Are you curious about new approaches?
Or are you rather skeptical about new things?
How do you approach new tasks?
Are you imaginative or do you find it difficult?
- Analytical ability
Do you like abstract, logical thinking?
Are you more of a visual talent?
- Social skills
Are you a team player or more of a lone fighter?
Can you empathize with other people?
Do you like to delegate tasks?
Do you make quick decisions?

- Select suitable strengths
Don't just list all of your strengths. Think about it beforehand and specifically name the skills and characteristics that fit the company and the job you are aiming for. Only these are real added value for the employer.
- Be realistic
You want to present yourself in the best possible way for the greatest job opportunities, but you should definitely remain realistic. Do not exaggerate when describing your strengths and do not add skills to yourself that you do not have.
- Give specific examples
It is unimpressive if you just list strengths. Any applicant can do that - it is questionable how often the points mentioned are correct. Your strengths will become more credible and convincing if you combine them with concrete examples. Don't just say “I can work well under pressure”, but report on the last project that you brought to success under stress and great time pressure.
Dealing with weaknesses
In addition to your strengths, you will also be confronted with your weaknesses in the interview and the entire application. HR managers like to ask for a self-assessment of the applicant and want to know where he sees his own weaknesses. Tricky because you want to get the job and not make the arguments yourself why you are not a good cast. The three most important things to keep in mind when dealing with your weaknesses are:
- No core competencies
Under no circumstances should you name skills or qualities that are essential to the job. Do you want to become a salesperson, but have problems approaching strangers? An absolute exclusion criterion. Therefore, pay very close attention to which vulnerabilities you reveal.
- No sense of humor
Some applicants want to humorously circumvent the question of their own weaknesses. With pseudo-funny answers like "My biggest weakness is my impatience - do I already have the job?"
- No empty phrases
You should also refrain from using empty phrases like “I am too perfectionist” or “I work too hard”. Such positive qualities, which are disguised as weaknesses, do not go down well with HR managers.
Better is an honest and authentic answer to your weaknesses. Best paired with the indication that you are currently working on it and improving. An example: “I really enjoy working in a team and work effectively - but I need rest for certain tasks and prefer to do them alone.
