2 Important selection criteria for plastics are mechanical and thermal properties, processability and price. If a suitable material is found, the surface often does not meet the requirements. The surface is the only material property that can be changed independently. Gas phase fluorination is often the right solution. Due to its high reactivity, fluorine partially replaces hydrogen atoms on the material surface. The changed surface properties result primarily from the increased surface energy and the polarity of the surface. Through targeted process control, the fluorination result can be optimally matched to the starting polymer and the desired application. Fluorination is a chemical reaction and not a coating. The depth of penetration of the fluorine atoms into the substrate is in the molecular range. The properties of the base material and its dimensions remain completely unchanged. The treatment process All relevant treatment parameters are matched to the product and treatment goal in a test phase. These values ​​then form the recipe for series production. They are pretreated in the vacuum chamber according to the recipe that has been developed. Small parts of a few mm in size are treated as bulk goods in a cylindrical chamber. In a cubic chamber, larger or mechanically sensitive parts are placed in baskets, lattice boxes or special load carriers. You can fill almost the entire chamber. Storage time The binding energy of the newly formed carbon-fluorine compound on the surface is extremely high. Therefore fluorination is an irreversible process. The surface properties achieved are therefore stable over the long term. 3 Better properties in practice Many surface properties are improved by the fluorination process. It changes the very top layer of the material in a very effective way without affecting the properties of the underlying material. This targeted action cannot be achieved with other methods. 5 Tasks Wetting-fluorination Liquid films Uniform process background The wettability of plastics with a liquid depends on the pairing of polarities: If the polarities are unequal, the liquid contracts to form drops on the surface. In contrast, fluorination produces polar plastics with a higher surface energy, which is thus adapted to the surface energy of the liquid. These surfaces can be easily wetted with polar liquids. 9 Advantages of the gas phase fluorination process Long-term stability Depending on the material, the surface effects achieved are stable for several months. Uniform and independent of geometry Even deep grooves, undercuts or interiors with small openings are uniformly pretreated. All exposed surfaces have the same properties. Reproducible In the fully automated process flow, the influencing factors are easy to control and monitor; the result can be achieved exactly again at a later point in time. Thermally uncritical The treatment process takes place at low temperatures, which are uncritical for the plastic material. There are no temperature peaks. Antibacterial effect Fluorination has an antimicrobial effect for a limited time.
